These two core doctrines are not "unique to Hinduism". This complementary

pair is found in Buddhism and Jainism as well. This brings me to a point

which was asserted (without evidence) recently at a conference. The man

proclaimed that the "theory of karma" is found fully developed in the Rig

Veda. I know of several studies on the subject, which conclude that this

central concept is curiously absent from the Rig Veda. The use of the

word *karma* in that most ancient text refers to ritual actions. Any

specific citations which show otherwise would be appreciated.
