Guest guest
Originally Buddhism was primarily a monastic religion and revered the monastic arhat ideal. But Mahaayaana in an effort to popularize Buddhism teaches the Bodhisattva ideal in contrast to the arhat. So is the Bodhisattva an effort based on the model of householder Brahmins to increase the scope of the spread of the dharma? For many of the Bodhisattvas in the Jaatakaas are householders. I don't think even Naagaarjuna or Asanga insist that Bodhisattvas have to be bhikshus only.
