POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT:

Academic Coordinator - Center for South Asia Studies

(UC Berkeley)

University of California, Berkeley.

The Center for South Asia Studies of the University of California,

Berkeley, seeks a full-time academic coordinator beginning January 1,

2003. The academic coordinator, under the Chair and executive

committee, is responsible for the overall management, budgeting,

fundraising, and program operations of the Center. An organized

research unit under the Dean of International and Area Studies, the

Center is supported by the University of California, its own endowment

funds, and a Title VI center awarded by the federal Department of

Education. The Center has as its central mission the support of

teaching and research, along with relevant cultural and community

activities, related to South Asia and South Asians, on the Berkeley

campus, the other campuses of the University of California, and

throughout the State. These activities include direct support for

teaching and research at Berkeley; curriculum and materials support

for teachers and other college faculty; provision of information about

South Asia for students, faculty, the media, business and government;

and support for the extensive South Asian collection of the University

of California, Berkeley, Library.

In addition to day-to-day management of the Center, the academic

coordinator oversees the operation of the Berkeley Urdu Language

Program in Lahore, Pakistan; the Center publication program and its

newsletter; the annual Berkeley South Asia Conference; summer

workshops for teachers; and the organization of faculty-sponsored

international research programs and meetings. Grant writing and fund

raising skills are essential as the bulk of the Center's financial

support is secured from outside the university. The academic

coordinator must be flexible and adaptable in managing time and

juggling an array of varied responsibilities.

The successful applicant must hold a PhD or equivalent degree in some

field of South Asian Studies, and possess administrative experience in

a university, non-profit organization or business commensurate with

the responsibilities of this position. Command of a reasonable

competence in one or more of the major languages of South Asia,

together with a period of field or research experience in the region,

is a highly desirable qualification. The salary, depending on

experience and qualifications, can range between $59,000 and a maximum

of $68,000 per year.

Review of applications will begin September 15, 2002 with a deadline

for receipt of applications of October 15, 2002. Interviews will be

conducted during the early part of November. Submit applications to:

Professor Thomas R. Metcalf, Chair

Include a complete C.V., a relevant writing sample, and three letters

of recommendation. The University of California is an equal

opportunity employer.
