David Magier ============== POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT: Academic Coordinator - Center for South Asia Studies (UC Berkeley) University of California, Berkeley. The Center for South Asia Studies of the University of California, Berkeley, seeks a full-time academic coordinator beginning January 1, 2003. The academic coordinator, under the Chair and executive committee, is responsible for the overall management, budgeting, fundraising, and program operations of the Center. An organized research unit under the Dean of International and Area Studies, the Center is supported by the University of California, its own endowment funds, and a Title VI center awarded by the federal Department of Education. The Center has as its central mission the support of teaching and research, along with relevant cultural and community activities, related to South Asia and South Asians, on the Berkeley campus, the other campuses of the University of California, and throughout the State. These activities include direct support for teaching and research at Berkeley; curriculum and materials support for teachers and other college faculty; provision of information about South Asia for students, faculty, the media, business and government; and support for the extensive South Asian collection of the University of California, Berkeley, Library. In addition to day-to-day management of the Center, the academic coordinator oversees the operation of the Berkeley Urdu Language Program in Lahore, Pakistan; the Center publication program and its newsletter; the annual Berkeley South Asia Conference; summer workshops for teachers; and the organization of faculty-sponsored international research programs and meetings. Grant writing and fund raising skills are essential as the bulk of the Center's financial support is secured from outside the university. The academic coordinator must be flexible and adaptable in managing time and juggling an array of varied responsibilities. The successful applicant must hold a PhD or equivalent degree in some field of South Asian Studies, and possess administrative experience in a university, non-profit organization or business commensurate with the responsibilities of this position. Command of a reasonable competence in one or more of the major languages of South Asia, together with a period of field or research experience in the region, is a highly desirable qualification. The salary, depending on experience and qualifications, can range between $59,000 and a maximum of $68,000 per year.
