Guest guest
Refer to CIA "fact book", a product of no doubt much "intelligence gathering" http://www.odci.gov/cia/publications/factbook/ Under ethnic categories for India, it gives . Indo-Aryan 72%, Dravidian 25%, Mongoloid and other 3% (2000) For Pakistan , it is Punjabi, Sindhi, Pashtun (Pathan), Baloch, Muhajir (immigrants from India at the time of partition and their descendants) . For Bangladesh, the breakdown is Bengali 98%, tribal groups, non- Bengali Muslims (1998) . For Srilanka, it is Sinhalese 74%, Tamil 18%, Moor 7%, Burgher, Malay, and Vedda 1% For Nepal, the figures are Brahman, Chetri, Newar, Gurung, Magar, Tamang, Rai, Limbu, Sherpa, Tharu, and others (1995) In spite all warnings from Indologists to the contrary that "indo- aryan" and "dravidian" are language families, CIA thinks it is ethnic categories; presumably so does the US Govt. But it happens only for India. In other countries , ethnic category is based on mother tongue But a Tamil speaker in Srilanka is only a Tamil, but if he is India, his ethnic category changes to Dravidian. So an Indian Tamil has more in common with a Telugu speaking Christian in Rayalaseema by virtue of being a Dravidian than with a Tamil in Jaffna, who is not a Dravidian. A Bengali Muslim in Calcutta is an "Indo-aryan" ethnic, ,and presumably he has more in common with a Gujarati Hindu than he has with a Bengali Muslim in Bangladesh who is merely a Bengali. A UP Muslim is an Indo-aryan, while a Sindhi Hindu in Pakistan is not an Indo-aryan . In the case of Nepal, ethnic categories are based neither on language or linguistic group , but caste and tribal affliations It is obvious , it is a CIA book of fantasies than facts
