If you can read Tamil, there are basically three books

dealing with Siva's TiruviLaiyATal at Madurai - a) kallADam (8th

century, have to check) b) PerumpaRRappuliyUr Nambi's (pazaiya)

TiruviLaiyADal (13th cnetury) c) ParaJjOti Munivar's TiruviLaiyATal

purANam (17thc century). In Sanskrit, NilakaNTa Dikshitar,

serving as a minister in the Madurai Nayak court, translated

from Tamil into Sanskrit the TiruviLaiyADals of Shiva as

SivalIlARNavam.

Unlike Sekkizar's periyapurANam, which was rendered into english

by Tiru. G. Vanmikanathan, and published by Ramakrishna Math,

Mylapore. Have not seen any full translation of Tiruvilaiyatalpuranam.

Prof. William Harman, now in Tennessee, has written many papers

and a book on Siva vilaiyatal. There is a documentary on Siva's

wedding in every Chitra month in Madurai. See W. P. Harman,

The sacred marriage of a Hindu goddess

Bloomington : Indiana University Press, c1989.

(I've the book in a box: will give more ref.s on Siva

Vilayadal(=liilaa)).

Dessigane, R.

La légende des jeux de Çiva à Madurai, d'après les textes et les

peintures,

par R. Dessigane, P. Z. Pattabiramin et J. Filliozat.

Pondichéry, Institut français d'indologie, 1960.

Swaminathan, S. (Subrahmanya),

Thiruvilayaadal puraanam : sixty four leelas of Lord Somsundareswara

of Madurai

Vijayawada : Sri Saiva Mahapeetham, [1988?]

-----------

Many books in Tamil, not much in other languages.

Keerthanams on Tiruvilayadal puranam is well known.

The 1965 movie of Sivaji Ganesan available in DVD

or videotape formats (Tiruvilaiyatal, Director: A. P. Nagarajan)

would serve as a good introduction.

Regards,

N. Ganesan
