Till date, if you check the Indian newspapers most Indians marry only by their traditional castes. The majority of brahmins marry only brahmins - even here most marry only into their own sects. Likewise for Vaishyas, Kshatriyas and various other sub-castes. Also this so called "four varnas" do not include the traditional anuloma and pratiloma castes. Where will the ratha kaara or the charioteer born of a intercaste-caste (Kshatriya and Vaishya?) marraige - fit in, in the chatur varna system? He is a sub-caste all on his own. Likewise Kayasthas. I have the impression that the four varNas only ever existed for theoretical idealists; the empirical social fact seems to have been jaati from a very early time, a fact that gave those idealists endless trouble, and resulted in a mind-boggling alchemy that sought to reconcile jaati to varNa-- when jaati was already complicated enough as it was!
