Guest guest
I think that it's at least partly because it's such a mathematically satisfying number, 2 x 2 x 3 x 3 x 3. It's divisible by 2, 3, 4, 6, 9, 12, 18, 27, and 54. It occurs in Indian astrology as the number of navAMzas in the zodiac, which are 9ths of signs and also quarters of nakSatras, so reconciling the solar and lunar systems.
