[Y-Indology] Vadhula Sakha - New publications

Just like Chaubey's earlier edition of the Vadhula texts (Srautasutra),

this one, too, is based ONLY on the rather secondary, lacunary, and wrong

Devanagari transcript of one Malayalam manuscript, made in Madras in the

Twenties.

 

For a critical edition, Indologists will have to wait for the one in

progress, by Yasuke Ikari (Kyoto U., and some of his colleagues), that is

based on a number of new Malayalam mss.

Several parts have already been published (in Zinbun 30, 1995 sqq).

 

This includes the several sections at the very beginning of the Vadhula

Brahmana (Anvakhyana) that are missing in the Madras copy. Ikari has

discovered it on one quite old palm leaf manuscript, found at the bottom of

a heap of loose leaves in one of the Manas in Kerala. Chaubey has simply

taken over this section from Ikari's publication (of course, without

reference to provenance).

 

In short, the statements in "Inside the texts" (HOS -Opera Minora 2), p.

vi following, and mutatis mutandis, note 15, find just another proof.

Thanks for the information. I agree entirely that Chaubey's edition

of the VadhulaSrautaSutra WAS INDEED full of lacunae (and defective

text) which become apparent when the relevant sections are compared

to the articles in ZINBUN.

 

Unfortunately, the pace of publication of VSS from Japan is so slow,

and this Journal journal arrives in US libraries rather erratically

that it is better to have B B Chaubey's edition to start with.

 

I personally hope that all the texts whose edition has been announced

for such a long time now (e.g. Jaiminiya Srautasutra by Dr. Parpola)

are published faster as a lot of interested readers are waiting for

them.
