Dear Dilip Karanth, Here is an interesting article about nAdasvaram. It shows one ancient instrument made of ivory. In the article (in tamil), the owners say it was given to their forefathers in the 11th century by the then Chola king Rajendran I. That precious instrument was played only for temple functions, the grandfather of the present owner refused to play it even before Kanchi mathathipati. About the ivory nAyanam, its owner Tiru. Latchappa Pilllai is from Tiruvaaruur temple heritage. When there was a drought in Tanjore, the Chola king requested the Tiruvarur musicians to play for rain. As rains materialized, the king donated two nAyanams to them, Known officially as "nayinAr aDiyAr". http://www.vikatan.com/av/2002/oct/27102002/av0802.shtml Regards, N.
