Dear list members,

1. Walter Maurers, "Sanskrit Language : An Introductory Grammar and Reader".

Now that I have purchased my copy I can safely :-) pass this information on

to the list. Amazon.com appears to now be sold out of this but it can be

found (new or used) from booksellers on www.bookfinder.com . I got my copy

new for a little over $50.00 . I've found this site www.bookfinder.com

invaluable for getting hard to find indological books at good prices.

2. Another good on-line bookstore.

I've also found http://books.arshavidya.org the online bookstore of Arsha

Vidya a good source for books on sanskrit grammar and Panini. For example

their prices for Rama Sharma's "Astadhyayi of Panini" seem quite good

compared to other vendors, but I think they might only have the first three

volumes.

They have:

Unfolding the Petals A New Sanskrit Grammar

Teplitz, David

Devavani Pravesika An Introduction to The Sanskrit Language

Goldman, Robert & Sutherland, Sally

How would the list members rate these two texts (their strengths and

weakness etc.)?

3. Walter Maurers Rg Veda translations:

Speaking of Walter Maurers books, I've been unable to locate his book of Rg

Veda translations "Pinnacles from Indias Past". Would any of the list

members have a copy theyed be interested in selling.

4. Pre-modern Sanskrit instruction materials.

The discussion on the list about modern sanskrit learning materials has got

me wondering about what was used in pre-modern times. Of course there are

the abridgements of the sanskrit grammars, but I'm wondering if there is

traditional simplified sanskrit reading material used to teach sanskrit in

pre-modern times. Are there any studies or articles on sanskrit teaching

methods in premodern times.

Thanks,

Harry
