Guest guest
To explain this briefly, the kaaraka vibhakti refers to those cases where the assignment of the case is determined by the semantic-syntactic relationship of an item to the action signified by a verb-root. Thus, for example, in the sentence devadatta.h graamam gacchati, graama is the karma (object) of the verb gacchati. On the other hand, the instances of upapada vibhakti show those cases where the assignment of case is determined by the co-occurrence of an item with another item. For example, if one says graamam prati gacchati, the case assignment of graamam is determined by its relation to prati, rather than to gacchati. This distinction has further consequences for making passives of these sentences. The passive of devadatta.h graamam gacchati would come to be devadattena graamo gamyate. On the other hand, the passive for devadatta.h graamam prati gacchati would come to devadattena graamam prati gamyate. Here, graamam prati functions almost like an adverbial phrase. Be careful to distinguish the use of items like prati as prepositions, versus their use as glued upasargas. If they are glued to the verb-roots, they no longer function as upapadas.
