Guest guest
An article by Pankaj Mishra on the colonial impact on modern Hinduism http://www.boston.com/dailyglobe2/335/focus/The_God_of_new_things+.sht ml Mr. Mishra's comments about the Gita reminds Agehananda Bharati's comments about Gandhi's understanding of the BhG: Gandhi just followed Annie Besant's interpretation. Guest guest
I dont know if this is the right forum to discuss this article. Perhaps Thiru Ganesan just wanted to draw attention to BG interpreations alone. Yet I could not resist writing my comments, which I have also already done in the InDiaspora list. 1. "Did she (his aunt from Rishikesh) know that she revered someone born a Muslim? I'm not sure." But did he ask ? He obviously did'nt because he was afraid that the answer would be 'yes'. He could then not write this article, you see. 2. Tracing the origins of the Vedas to nomads or hunter-gatherers or whatever is quite unnecessary to the theme of this article. 3. Yes, perhaps there was greater pluralism among common-folk during a time when muslim rule existed. But what were all the factors that led to its change ? Definitely the raise of the Deobandi school was also one ? 4. After saying that the BJP ideology and agenda resembled Vivekananda's (who he himself says was firmly rooted in folk- hinduism), he says that Hinduism under BJP is heading for an oppressive monotheism a la Arya Samaj or Brahmo Samaj. 5. He clubs Tagore, Nehru and Gandhi under this liberal humanism umbrella. I respect humanism whether it is religiously inspired or not. But Gandhi's humanism poured from his own religion just like Mother Teresa's poured from hers. Appropriating Gandhi for a non- religious humanistic movement is wrong.
