Guest guest
The origins of the praNava mantram, Om can be studied in Tamil villages. Its original meaning of "giving assent" occurs as om/um koTTal(koTuttal). Dr. J-L. Chevillard's 1996 Purusartha paper records two types of tamil story narrations by fisherfolks, one of which is "omme katai". om/um is told to "give assent" in daily life. Some recordings of the om/um, and its relations with Om, http://www.services.cnrs.fr/wws/arc/ctamil/2003-01/msg00001.html http://www.services.cnrs.fr/wws/arc/ctamil/2003-01/msg00002.html Note that tamil has a unique letter for Om.
