Guest guest
Dear list members, I'm trying to prepare some bibliographic records for the KSTS (Kashmir Series of Texts and Studies) series. Title pages of volumes 1 and 3 of the series have in english "The Kashmir series of Texts and Studies edited by J. C. Chatterji,..." but in sanskrit at the bottom of the page " zrIjagadIzacandra-caTTopAdhyAya-saMpAditA " The Library of Congress has J.C. Chatterji as editor for vol. 1, but the NYPL Oriental Collections has Jagadisachandra Chattopadhyaya as editor for it. Are in fact J. C. Chatterji and jagadIzacandra-caTTopAdhyAya the same person. (I believe J. C. Chatterji stands for Jagadisha Chandra Chatterji) . Many thanks, Harry Spier 371 Brickman Rd. Guest guest
If on the LC catalog you do an author search on Chattopadhyaya, Jagadisa-Candra, you will be referred to the name authority Chatterji, Jagadish Chandra, which shows my cataloging colleagues decided they were the same person. The LCCNs (Library of Congress Card [now Control] Number) show that the first book of his to be cataloged by LC was acquired in 1931, and several more in the 1940s, when he was possibly still alive, and Horace Poleman would probably have met him in his prolonged buying tour of 1939-40. Also, the catalogers would frequently write letters to authors asking them which the preferred form of their name was. If this seems like driving the nail in with too many strokes it may be because I have gotten involved with some people who think Shakespeare's works were written by the Early of Oxford rather than by "the Stratford man" as they call Wm. Shakespeare. And last night public TV had a 1 ½ hour program on those who think Christopher Marlowe did them. Happy New Year, Allen Thrasher Allen W.
