Guest guest
Dear Smt. Sugrutha, Contacted Dr. Vasu Renganathan (UPenn), The song section selected by TN govt. is at: http://ccat.sas.upenn.edu/plc/tamilweb/gif/tamiltay.jpg The full poem is also in Vasu's site: http://ccat.sas.upenn.edu/plc/tamilweb/tamizhttaay.html Pl. note that there was not any PIL, the TN govt. took the state poem lines that have no reference to Sanskrit from P. Sundaram Pillai's composition. He was from Kerala, Alwaye (I think), and served the govt. of Travancore for a long time. Sundaram Pillai was the one who fixed the age of Gnanasambandhar as seventh century by doing a correlation between epigraphy, and tamil lit. A key milestone, so far. His drama, ManonmaNiiyam was one of the first of its kind. Perhaps, the whole poem should be translated by scholars and analyzed with Tamil literature backdrop. As I said, in literature the rivalry between the two classical languages of India is well recorded. Rememeber F. W. Ellis, and R. Caldwell have written about Dravidian language family by then. Missionaries, and Madras presidency colonial rulers were using those writings as well. Perhaps, essays in Tamil itself will help. May be they are out there. I do not know prof. Sumathi Ramaswamy's tamil expertise. Perhaps, she, along with Tamil literary scholars should translate the whole poem, and also the whole text. That may involve good amt. of research and some years. BTW, Manonmaniya nATakam is available at Project Madurai website in pdf format: http://www.tamil.net/projectmadurai/pub/pm0105/manon.pdf For available Tamil works, click "Finished works" button. http://www.tamil.net/projectmadurai/ My experience in the internet is that while many talk tamil nadu politics in english, their biases, and sometimes even hatred, show up. But rarely they do their writings in Tamil even tho' ample opportunity exists to start lists using TSCII fonts. If they start e-lists where they write extensively in tamil, then we all can undertstand their skills. Many tamil writers can respond too. Regards, N.
