Has any survey been done in TN > regarding the popularity of Shaivism and Vaishnavism (number of > followers etc), the number of temples of each etc? For those reading Tamil literature, it is known. In epigraphy and puraaNams, Saiva records are far more in number. A conservative estimate for Saiva stalapuraaNams and Vaishnava ones will be 500:1. For an intro of Tamil saiva puraaNams in english, David Shulman, Tamil temple myths, 1980. The number of temples dedicated to Shiva and Saivaite deities like Durga far outnumber other sects. The major mutts with large following, temples and lands have been historically Saivaite. The Saiva Siddhanta and Veerasaiva aadheenams come to mind. Regards, N.
