Indeed that is the QUESTION not the answer. Who built it how and when? >As a work of art it is mediocre and average. That is a matter of opinion. Some one could say the same thing about Khazurao. All monuments require human labor and it may not be necessarily slave labor. That is such a typical Marxist utopian view. The Umed Bhavan,in Rajasthan, which some say is more beautiful than the Taj(o) Mahal(aya), was infact built to provide employment to people. Therefore let the sealed rooms be opened and let scholars evaluate the evidence instead of relying on dubious traditions.

Baburnama is very clear about the fact that its author never liked India much, and always longed for his homeland in Afghanistan. There are many more marble structures in Rajasthan that are less known and smaller, but could rival the Taj(o)in beauty. The temple at JaswantThudda (? writing from memory) is a good example.
