The obviously incorrect statement found in some catalogues, like

those you mentioned, comes from a misunderstanding of one of the

concluding verses in Abhinava's PTV: ... srisomanandamatam vimrsya

maya nibaddham idam (sorry, I don't like the usual encodings; after

all, all the members of this list are supposed to mentally restore

the missing diacritical marks...).

Somananda did write a commentary on the PT (now lost), which was

carefully taken into account by Abhinava.

Dear Raffaele,

Could you give me references in print that I can use to get this error

in the author corrected by our cataloging staff?

Thanks,

Allen

Dear Allen,

as far as I can guess, there are two main sources of errors in the

Library of Congress and Harvard's cataloguing Somananda-related works.

In 1918 KSTS edition of Abhiinavagupta's Paratrimsikavivarana, the

Editor emphasizes in the Introduction that Abhinava is strictly

following the lost commentary by Somananda. On p.13 he even says

(greatly exaggerating; in fact the PTV is a very personal and

fascinanting work of Abhinavagupta) that Somananda "may, in all

justice, be called the original commentator of Paratrimsika". Hence

the mistake of the cataloguing staff (there is no need to assume, as

I did in my earlier posting, that they were misled by reading the

the concluding verse 19, p.282, in the original Sanskrit).

Another booklet published in the same series has a very misleading

title (I am quoting by memory, not having the book at hand now):

Paratrimsika-tatparyadipika and Shaktavijnana by Somananda. This has

made the cataloguing staff speak of a commentary on the PT (the above

mentioned Paratrimsika-tatparyadipika) by Somananda. In fact the

Paratrimsika-tatparyadipika is a late, but not devoid of interest,

anonymous commentary, while the Shaktavijnana is a short work

ascribed to *one* Somananda (to my mind, certainly not the famous

Sivadrsti's author). Hence the (more justified) mistake of the

cataloguing staff.

To sum up: the Paratrimsikavivarana is of course by Abhinavagupta;

Somananda's commentary on the Paratrimsika is lost; the author of

Paratrimsika-tatparyadipika is unknown (I can add that he was very

conversant with Abhinavagupta's short commentary, the so-called

Laghuvrtti); the Shaktavijnana is by one Somananda (not our

Somananda).

Hope this may help.

Sincerely,

Raffaele Torella
