I personally visited this famous village called Mettur in the Summer of 2001. I was very anxious to see this wonderful revival firsthand. I managed to meet all the three persons in the town capable of speaking Sanskrit! (two were connected with the paaThashaalaa and the third was involved with speak sanskrit movement. There was an active movement to spread sanskrit many years back, but nothing seems to have come of it. The persons, I met were serious (traditional) scholars interested in (Shaankara) Vedanta and were a pleasure to talk and listen to, but they were not involved with any popular movement. It is certainly a nice place for the traditional Vedic learning and vedanta! So, I think it is about time we forget this "rural legend" and move on to other sources of inspiration for spread of Sanskrit. P.S. I agree with the rest of the article by Naga Ganesan, I am only commenting on the basic propoganda based on no facts! -- |Avinash Sathaye Phone:(859)277-0130(Home), (859)257-8832(Office) | Web page: www.msc.uky.edu/sohum
