Please refer to Monier-William's Sanskrit-English Dictionary under "raghu".

The KAzikA commentary on PANini's aSTAdhyAyii sUtra 8.2.18(kRpo ro laH)

gives a vArttika:

vAla-mUla-lghvasurAlamaGguliinAM vA ro lamApadyata iti vaktavyam || vAlaH,

vAraH | mUlam, mUram | laghu, raghu | asuraH, asulaH | alam, aram | aGguliH,

aGguriH |

The biggest grammar of the sUtra style and the only extant complete revised

edition of PANini, the sarasvatiikaNThAbharaNa of Bhojadeva (total no. of

sUtra 6432, as per Madras edition 1937) gives the following sUtra:

irA-tarpara-karabha-vAra-khAra-raghu-garAdiinAm arthabhede || 7.3.60 ||

The hRdayahAriNii commentary of daNDanAtha (c.12th century AD) on this sUtra

says:

irAdiinAM sambandhino rephasyArthabhede lakArAdesho vA bhavati | irA amRtam,

ilA bhUmiH | .... raghuH rAjA, laghuH apaciparimANaH | garaH viSam, galaH

prANyaGgam | AdigrahaNAd

mudgara-mudgala-maNDara-maNDala-kandara-kandalAdiinAmapi bhavati ||

Under this topic it is worthwhile referring to the zloka 3.21(zrutasya

..... raghumAtmasambhavam) in KAlidAsa's "raghuvaMzam" and the corresponding

commentary of mallinAtha.

Kind regards.

Sanskrit raghu and laghu

Dear Mr. Anthonyappleyard,

you wrote, "-----compare

Vedic [raghu] = Classical Sanskrit [laghu] = English [light] = Greek

[elakhus]."

Are you saying here that meaning of " raghu" and " laghu" are the same

and they are equal to English word "light" (not heavy). Perhaps 'laghu "

may be connected to English "light" but where did you find 'raghu' also

means "laghu"?. Could you kindly give reference of Sanskrit dictionary

where the meaning of raghu is listed as that of laghu or similar to that?

Thanks. N.R.Joshi.

It is on page .xvi. in the introduction of the textbook "Teach

Yourself Sanskrit" by Michael Coulson, ISBN 0-340-56867-4 :-

.........................

The meanings are somewhat different, but the words have the same

origin.
