Brian,

The logic seems to be, simply, to place the letters in alphabetical order on

the petals of the cakras in a clockwise direction. You start by the fifth

cakra

(vizuddha), and when its petals are full you then proceed downwards to the

fourth cakra and fill its petals. You continue in this way filling out the

petals of the remaining cakras: the third, second, and first (always in

alphabetical order). Once you have filled out the petals of the lowest cakra

(mUlAdhAra) you are at Sa. This means you have one letter left, the Ha. So

then

you take the Ha along with the compound character kSa and place them, from

left

to right, on the two petals of the sixth cakra (anAhata).

What is noteworthy is that the 'seed syllables" of the cakras alter the

alphabetical order. They start with Om in the sixth cakra, and continue

downwards with Ha and then the semivowels, which are listed as Ya, Ra, Va, La,

instead of Ya, Ra, La, Va (their alphabetical order).

All of this, of course, according to the popular description of the cakras in

the SaTcakranirUpaNa (translated by John Woodroffe in his book, The Serpent

Power).
