PaaNDya name occurs for Northen kings also. V. Mani, Puranic

ency. p. 565 "PaaNDya I. A king of Vidarbha who was

a great devotee of Siva. [...] ('SatarudrasaMhitaa, 'SivapuraaNa)".

The PaaNDya and PaaNDava connections have been told in

Tamil literature and epigraphy for about 2000 years.

And, M. Raghava Aiyangar quotes the Mahabharata epic

traditions of BabhruvAhana, MaNaluur (east of Madurai),

and PaaNDyas' claiming descent from PaaNDava

Arjuna via CitrAngadaa in the large Cinnamanuur copperplate

grant etc., can also be considered along with Parpola's paper,

(Pandaie and SItA: On the historical

background of the Sanskrit epics, Journal of the American Oriental

Society 122 (2), 2002 p. 361-373).

Kauaravas (Kauravya?) is called kavuriyar/kauriyar in

sangam Tamil. In akanAn2URu 70, DhanushkOTi (of Ramesvaram)

is mentioned where Raama took consultations with the vAnara

sena. In aka. 70, "kavuriyar" is mentioned for PaaNDyas,

the kings of the region ("ven2vEl kavuriyar ton2mutu kOTi).

Also, in CilapptikAram, "kauriyar peruJcIrk kOlin2 cemmaiyum".

It's noteworthy that only Pandya dynasty is called

"The Five" (PaJcavar) just like PaaNDavas in all

of Tamil literature 9and inscriptions), and this title

is not for Cholas or Cheras or Pallavas. Some examples

where PaaNDavas are addressed as Panjavar (the Five).

a) cerumAN paJcavar ERE! - puRam 58.

b) Madurai description in ParipATal tiraTTu:

"paNivu il uyar ciRappil paJcavan2 kUTal".

b) Kalidasa mentions Indra's necklace worn by

PaaNDya kings. In CilappatikAram, mention is made:

"vAn2avar kOn2 Aram vayaGkiya tOL paJcavan2".

Also,

"ceziya vAzi ten2n2ava vAzi

paziyoTu paTarAp paJcava vAzi!" - Cilampu.

c) When the jnAnasambandhar weans PaaNDya king

of Madurai from Jainism, he mentions "PaJcavan2"

title of PaaNDyas

"paJcavan2 ten2n2an2 pANTiyarkku AkavE" (Campantar tEvAram).

etc.,

N. Ganesan
