In Telugu, Joharu, JOharu, JOtha - all mean salutation/Namaskaram.

The word is found even in Literature, from 15th century.

The actual pronouniation is more like Z(as in zebra)ohar. This letter

is not used these days.

I could not find any explanation. \\

Does it have anything to do with "jayakara", "jaya jaya"?

In Tamil, the greetings word is "vaNakkam" - has

the same meaning as Namaskaaram/Namaste.

Indologists told that namaaz (Persian) and namaste

go back to IE.

The Telugu Poet Sreenatha (15 century) uses the word Johar in his

"Srngara Nishadham".

Also poet Paparaju (? century) has it in his "Uttara Ramayanam".

Hope this helps.
