Guest guest
I am searching for any relevant information on the history of Sourashtrians in Tamilnadu. It is quite interesting to note that there is a `brahmin' classification among the Sourashtra community. Some of them wear the `poonul' and are qualified for being a `Prokidar'; there are names among many in this community which have the suffix `Iyer'. The history of migration of the sourashtra community, just like the Iyer community, also is traced back to the incursions of Mohammed Ghazni. There is one striking thing that is worth observing here : while the Tamil Iyers who also were supposed to have migrated down south due to such repeated incursions do not speak any other language than Tamil, the sourashtrians still do speak their native language, despite a thorough blend of their culture with the Tamil culture. There could be two inferences drawn from this : 1. the sourashtrians' migration could have been very much later than is supposed and 2. the Tamil Iyers never possibly migrated to Tamilnadu at all. I am not trying to speculate anything, but trying to trace the history of Sourashtra community, which opens up some interesting inferences, when I look at the `brahmin' classification within this community. I would appreciate very much if any one here can throw any light on the migration of the Sourashtra community or any related details. Thank You. vishvesh
