Guest guest
A famous Tamil prabandham, of anonymous authorship and dating to 16-17th centuries CE, has been placed in Project Madurai. It is at: http://www.tamil.net/projectmadurai/pub/pm0040/tviTutUtu.pdf It was first edited by Sri. U. V. Swaminaathaiyar in 1930 from a rare, single manuscript he received from a family of Tamil lovers. Thanks to UVS, this beautiful text was saved for posterity. The grand editor of tamil classical texts has described how he came to possess its Olai manuscript vividly in an essay, "in2n2umaRiyEn2" (nallurai-k-kOvai, vol. III). I created the PDF e-version of "maturaic cokkanAtar tamiz viTutUtu" maintaining the veNpA metrics, using two print editions: a) ti. caGkup pulavar (uraiyAciriyar), maturaic cokkanAtar tamiz viTutUtu, SISS society, Chennai, 1966 and, b) UVS (editor), maturaic cokkanAtar tamiz viTutUtu, UVS Library, Kalakhestra, Adayar, Madras, 1981. There is a study of this text in English: Sumathi Ramaswamy, Language of the People in the World of Gods: Ideologies of Tamil before the Nation, Journal of Asian studies, Volume 57, Issue 1 (Feb. 1998), p. 66-92. In some kaNNis (2-line verses) of this ~400 years old text, Tamil and Sanskrit are compared while addressing Madurai Cokkar/Sundaresvarar. Regards, N.
