I search for information about the possibility for women in the Hindu tradition

to live an ascetic life.

Are there monasteries for women?

If you use the term Hindu in the historical sense (meaning Indian),

then you should consider Jain and Buddhist nuns also.

There have always been Jain nuns, even now they play an important

role. Strictly speaking they don't have monastaries since they are

expected to keep wandering except for the rainy season; however in

many Jain complexes, some sections are often intended for nuns.

Ganini Gyanmati Mataji and Acharyaa Chandanaji are well known.

There used to Buddhist nuns, but I think their ordination lines died

out very early.

I have seen at least some brahmanical nuns, I am not sure if they

belonged to any formal order. The bramhakumaris are a relatively new

sect.
