Guest guest
Dear all, my former Marathi Teacher asked me to forward the following announcement concerning her new Marathi textbook. As language textbooks on Marathi are quite rare some of you might be interested. The book including the audio cassette should be ordered directly at: neeti_badwe The author of this book Dr. Neeti Badwe is Professor in German at the University of Pune, India. She has a long standing experience in teaching German as a Foreign Language, both at the graduate and post-graduate level. She has also been teaching Marathi as a Foreign Language since more than 15 years, mainly to American and German students. A contrastive study of phonetic, syntactic and cultural aspects forms the basis for structuring this book and designing exercises. All the best Sonja Stark-Wild Learning Marathi as a Foreign Language' Module I and Module II `Learning Marathi as a Foreign Language' is divided into two parts. Module I primarily concentrates on the script and pronunciation; whereas Module II essentially contains the basic syntactic structures and the conversational patterns in Marathi. This project envisages a wide range of users including : · Foreign students and scholars interested in learning Marathi as an area of linguistic, cultural or religious studies and in carrying out research in this field. Module I is a set of a book comprising of six units (156 pages) and an audio cassette (60 min.). The Units are organized thematically. A special feature of Module I is the integral method. Small dialogues have been directly introduced with a component of script and instruction for pronunciation. Structural and optical similarity of characters has been the main criterion to classify the characters in smaller groups to be introduced in each Unit. Each character has been illustrated by dividing it into 3 or 4 convenient strokes, which are serially numbered and marked with small arrows to show the direction of the stroke. This facilitates smooth and methodical learning of drawing the characters. Module I provides : - Material to practise characters in Devnagri script and sounds of Marathi along with vocabulary and morphological indicators, verbal translation into English, the minimal necessary grammar, exercises and key to the exercises. - Audio aid to all the main texts and selected exercises for practising pronunciation. Our experience reveals that a new learner of a foreign language cannot entirely rely on his own ears to make a precise distinction between the sounds of Marathi that are unknown to him. Therefore, in addition to an audio cassette a visual aid in form of transcription has also been provided. - Tables with signs for vowels, consonants, half consonants and vowel combination - and tables for pronunciation with examples from Marathi, Hindi, German and English. Module I (Rs. 300/- outside India 20/- Dollars or 20,- Euro) Module II is in print _____________________________ Dr. Sonja Stark-Wild Suedasien-Institut der Universitaet Heidelberg Bibliothek South Asia Institute of the University of Heidelberg Library Im Neuenheimer Feld 330 69120 Heidelberg F.R.G.
