Dear All List Members:

I have recently joined LBSSV as a first year student for my second M.A. but this

time in Vyakarana.

The entire course consists of the Mahabhashya.

In the first year we will be studying Patanjali's commentary till the fourth

chapter of Ashtadhyayi.

I want to request list members to tell me what is the best translation available

for them both in Hindi and English.

I have Yudhishthir Mimansak's hindi translation. He is good.

I have also heard of K.V> Abhyankar in English and Charudeva Shastri in Hindi.

If list members can kindly give me more from their experiences of all the

current translations including translations of Kaiyat's Pradeep and Nagoji's

Udyot, this shall be of immense help.

Any other comprehensive writers can be suggested.

Thanks so much.

Your best bet is to read S.D. Joshi and Roodbergen's volumes of

the translation of the Mbh. They have translated the Paspasha

section, and about 10 different Ahnikas including Karaka,

Vibhakti, Samasa etc., most of which falls within the first half of

the Astadhyayi. If you want a translation of Nagasa and Kaiyata

as well, then you have to be able to read French. There are

several volumes of translations published by Professor Piere

Filliozat of Paris. Best,

Madhav Deshpande
