Dear Mr Pandey,

A scholar has just started the work of translating the MBh on ch.3. I have

been long requesting Dr Vijayapal, editor of Vedavani, to request some expert of

MBh to prepare its Hindi vyAkhyA from ch.3 onwards. He has informed me that the

work has started. He has received some sample translation and notes of the

initial few passages from ch.3. He says that the sample vyAkhyA presented by the

scholar is rather too extensive. The scholar says, he cannot prepare the vyAkhyA

smaller in size than this.

Kind regards.

Dear List Members:

I had earlier written regarding translations of Mahabhasya[1-4] in HIndi and

English. Mr. Deshpande had suggested S.D. Joshi.

However, his works are only till the 2nd chapter and I have already found

Subrahmanyam Shastri's 'Lectures on Pat.'s Mahabhashya' in English and

Yudhishthir Mimansak's translation till the 2nd chapter.

I am looking for two things.

(1) Translation of chapters 3 and 4 of Mahabhashya - in Hindi or English

(2) Comprehensive treatise on Mahabhashya - strictly in Englsi/Hindi - which

explains in details of what this book is about, its methods, its contents,

important discussions etc. I did find somme works with this comprehensive nature

but the authors never went beyond the Navahnika or worse Paspashahnika.

Thanks and Regards,

Chetan Pandey

S.D. Joshi-Roodbergen volumes of the Mbh give a far more

extensive and analytical commentary than any publication before.

The older works like Subramaniam Shastri's Lectures are just

not comparable to Joshi-Roodbergen volumes. As you may be

aware, the only complete translation of the Mbh is the eight

volume Marathi translation by Vasudeva Shastri Abhyankar.

Best,

Madhav Deshpande
