I do not know whether yoy have seen the whole book

of Subhashita Ratna Bhandagaram. I saw this book

about 60 years ago in the Vedapathasala Library of

Sringeri Mutt at Kalady, Kerala. It is published

from Calcutta. It has collected verses on various

topics and given those topic wise. So it is a

collection of old verses.

For exampe uinder KAAKA I found the following verse

which comes to my mind now.

kaaka yaachakayor madhye varam kaako na yaachakah /

kaaka aahwayathe kaakaan yaachako na thu yaachakaan //

We have a copy of it in India. Many libraries should have a copy.

It is collection of subhashitas. I think it may be based on

Subhashita-ratna-kosha, compiled between 1100 and 1130 by Vidyakara,

the abbot of Jagaddala vihara in Bengal; but contains additional

subhashitas. It has been translated by Daniel Ingalls as An Anthology

of Sanskrit Court Poetry.

I have seen the whole book (in Sanskrit), but unfortunately I am not

an Indologist! That is actually the reason for my enquiry; the

passage of interest to me, cited in English by an Indian medical

historian in the 1950s, gives a graphic descriptin of old age,

including details reminiscent of parkinsonism. From more recent

sources I have become aware of a disorder described in older Indian

medical texts (A.D. 0-1400) with the name kampavata, which also

resembles parkinsonism, and which was treated with extracts of plant

known to contain levodopa, the current medical therapy for

parkinsonism. what I would like to establish is whether the passage

from the Subhashita Ratna Bhandagaram is as old as these medical

texts, or more recent. Am I correct in understanding that the SRB is

a compendium of older texts, from different sources? And if so, from

what period of time do the original sources derive?

Thanks again for any help. If anybody has any more information on

kampavata or the plant atmagupta (Mucuna pruriens), or sources for

neurology in Indian medicine, that would also be handy.
