Guest guest
Dear Members Please anyone teach me. I am now studying Uddyotakara's Nyaayavaarttika. In NV under 1. 2. 1, he criticizes a compound in Buddhist's definition of discussion. He says "Because of no recognition of the essence of vizeSaNa and vizeSya, genitive tatpuruSa is not possible.(tatra taavad vizeSaNavizeSyasvaruupaanavagater na SaSThiisamaasaH)" G. Jhaa translates vizeSaNa and vizeSya into relation and relative. But the ground of his translation is not obvious. I want to know the exact meaning of vizeSaNa and vizeSya in this context, and the background of this discussion, especially grammatical background. I have also found the following description of MahaabhaaSya under 2. 3. 50 Varttika 3 SaSThiii zeSa iti ced vizeSyasya pratiSedho vaktavyaH. raajJaH puruSa ity atra raaja vizeSaNaM puruSo vizeSyaH. tatra pratipadikaartho vyatirikta iti kRtvaa prathamaa na praapnoti. tatra SaSThii syaat tasyaaH pratiSedho vaktavyaH I wonder whether this passage is related with Uddyotakara's discussion. But I don't know the exact meaning of the above passage.
