<http://www.samvadindia.com/evam/> Evam: Forum on Indian Representations

takes as its starting point the absence of any major journal that deals with

India holistically, its past and its present, its culture and imagination,

its inner realities and outer dimensions. Evam wishes to engage with the

subject of the subcontinent and its civilisation by considering the very

meaning or idea of India along with its material and concrete

manifestations. More specifically, Evam wants to interrogate, analyse, and

reorient various representations of India.... While the first issue of Evam

was a collection of diverse pieces, both creative and critical, this

[second] issue is devoted to one topic, saundarya, which is usually

translated as beauty. Saundarya is not a rasa, but is perhaps related to all

the rasas, including bîbhatsa, the repulsive. One might argue that a

preconditon for bîbhatsa is the absence of saundarya. The nature of that

which is sundar, the beautiful, and of saundarya, beauty, is to attract us

by pleasing the senses...

Makarand is Professor of English, Centre for Linguistics and English, School

of Language, Literature, and Culture Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University

since 1999. He teaches courses at the M.A. and M.Phil level and guides

doctoral research. His M.A. courses include American Literature, Indian

Literature in English/Translation, Readings in Literary Theory and

Criticism, and M.Phil courses include Research Methodology and Introduction

to Contemporary Literary Theory. His Ph.D. in English from the University of

Illinois at Urbana-Champaign focused on "Mysticism in Indian English

Poetry." Makarand is General Editor of a series of reprints of rare and

out-of-print Indian English titles published by the Sahitya Akademi, New

Delhi, and Editor of <http://www.samvadindia.com/evam/> Evam: Forum on

Indian Representations, an international biannual journal. He is also

Managing Trustee of the non-profit Samvad India Foundation. Makarand is a

regular guest speaker or organizer at several conferences, seminars and

workshops worldwide.

My introduction to Makarand was through his talk at the

<http://www.infinityfoundation.com/indic_colloq/colloq_home.htm> Indic

Colloquium on "

> The Third Eye and Two Ways of (Un)knowing: Gnosis, Alternative

Modernities, and Postcolonial Futures" (July 25, 2002) reflections that were

explicitly inspired by the writings of Shri Aurobindo. I approached him

thereafter to discuss various points of contact between these perceptions

and those of Abhinavagupta. He subsequently invited us to contribute the

joint-paper (instead of my informal presentation to the Colloquium on

Abhinava's aesthetics) by Elizabeth and myself "Between Veda and Tantra:

Pachali Bhairab of Katmandu" (originally submitted to the Roots of Tantra

volume...) to Evam III, and sent us critical feedback from an anonymous

reviewer that we have taken into consideration in the final version.

Makarand subsequently visited us in Paris for dinner on 7th July 2003, and

even saw me off on the talgo to Madrid the following day. He is largely

responsible, through his persistent queries on the underlying concept, for

the new concluding section on "An Acculturation Model of 'Hinduism' and

Indian Religious History."

Friends,

Here are the contents

<http://www.svabhinava.org/friends/MakarandParanjape/Evam3-frame.htm> of the

just published volume III (1-2) of Evam: Forum on Indian Representations.

Though several of the papers have grown out of contributions to the Indic

Colloquium (July 2002 - links provided below), the papers have all been

revised and polished and the scholarly apparatus provided. Some participants

have substituted different papers and many of the contributors to the volume

are new. The journal is also richly illustrated. Please forward the table of

contents and ordering info (below) to your friends, colleagues and

institutions.

Thanks!
