There is a school that says essentially most of the Rg Veda is

astronomical in nature.

The seven sacred rivers are actually named after the seven rays of

the sun. Thus, some , if not most, of the Rks supposedly extolling

the rivers are in fact hymns to the sun. ( i am still looking for

exact references for this )

While I do not really know the content of truth in this, I feel the

following Rk gives the meaning that Indra is a celestial body...

"Oh Indra, while you are seated near the Sun, your body expands... You

look fierce then"

The usual colour that is associated with Indra is red.

Hence, I feel Indra is a red looking celestial body in the east. In

the mornings, he looks bigger and too red ( hence, fierce).

The root ' Indh' means ' to ignite'

His weapon , the vajra is nothing but the lightening from the east.

This lightening , striking the sea several times (99 times , to be

precise) through the surf on the water, (surf conducts the

electricity ) has ignited life, by ending the inertia (or , vritra).

I invite comments and references on this arguement.

Btw, I am looking for references on the history of sankha, the son

of Yama. Both Yama and his son are Rg Vedic seers.

(Yama is black. On the other hand, the sankha dweep of puranas is

nothing but today's Africa. So, did Sankha get his name coz he is

connected with this continent?)
