Guest guest
Dear Sangeeta, The books in the list at the bottom of this message might be useful, though I have not examined them. Where are you living? I might be able to direct you to someone or some collection that could help you in person. You might try contacting the Folger Shakespeare Library, the largest collection of Shakespeare in the world, which has much on his contemporaries. The Head of Reference might have some ideas. I know the Folger makes considerable efforts to get translations of Shakespeare into world languages; they may an effort for those of the other Elizabethans. Contact: Dr. Georgianna Ziegler Head of Reference Folger Shakespeare Library reference (202) 675-0311 fax: (202) 675-0313 I have looked in my own library's catalog and in OCLC/WorldCat for translations of plays by these authors published in India, without success. My thought was that the translations might include information about when they were produced. You might also try the Index Translationum, a UNESCO bibliography of translations around the world, which is available free online from 1979 <hhtp://www.unesco.org/culture/translationum> and prior to 1979 at very many research libraries in various countries, it having been sent free on deposit. If have searched your authors in the Sahitya Akademi's National Bibliography of Indian Literature (see description at <http://www.lib.uchicago.edu/e/su/southasia/nbil.html> in its searchable online form as part of the Digital Library of South Asia at <http://dsal.uchicago.edu/cgi-bin/nbil.py> and not found any titles. The NBIL does include translations into Indian languages of foreign language works, if they were deemed important by the experts. Of course, as you know, frequently Indian plays are adaptations of European plays without admitting it upfront, and on the other hand professed translations are heavily indigenized. The subject heading for Elizabethan drama in general as used by Library of Congress, vast numbers of other libraries, and many article indexing services, is: English drama Early modern and Elizabethan, 1500-1600 Since Jonson, Webster, and Kid (and for that matter Shakespeare himself) worked largely of James I and VI (reigned King of England 1603-1625) , the question of Jacobean drama arises. There does not seem to be a subject heading using that phrase, instead it is: English drama 17th century Hope this is of some help. Yours, Allen Thrasher Allen W.
