Guest guest
I am copying below the article authored by silentsoul named Aum Sadhna and Samadhi:-

SIGNIFICANCE OF AUM : AUM IS THOUGHT TO BE THE ETERNAL SOUND. IT IS SAID THAT THE WORLD OMMMM WAS PRONOUNCED BY GOD TO START THE UNIVERSE. IT IS THE SOUND THAT GIVES CONSCIOUSNESS TO THE MOTHER NATURE TO START ACTING. Aum has three sounds A...U....M. " A " signifies the beginning of the universe. U signifies the life period of universe and M signifies the destruction of the Universe. Hence Om is the only word which notifies the three main work of God that is creation, operation and destruction of srishti (Universe). This represents the three first forms of God viz. are Brahmaa (creator), Vishnu (operator) and the destructor (The Shiva).

Most of the mantra in Hinduism start with the word AUM, because AUM is the consciousness and the other words in a mantra are Nature or Prakriti. AUMin itself is a complete Mantra and its chanting is sacred and brings enlightenment. It is truely called MAHA MANTRA. In Kathopanishada, Yama, the God of death while telling Nachiketa about the ultimate truth declares :-

" Aitdveyvaaksharam brahm eitdvayakshram param !
etdveyaksharam gyatva yo yadichchchti tasya tat !!
(kathopanishda 1/2/16)
God with qualities, and supreme Brahm without qualities, are both represented by word "AUM" and those who chant it they go to the highest goal as per their wishes"

In Gita also bhagwan Sri Krishna declares :

omitykaaksharam brahm vyaharnmamanusmaran
yaa prayati tyjandeham sa yati parma gatim

(Gita 8/13)
The one who understandsAUM and chants it thinking it as my name, he gets the highest abode, after leaving the body.

So the power of AUMis undisputable. Its chanting, purifies the brain and controls the desires and takes one to the supreme consciousness.

WITH OTHER MANTRAS : If you have a Guru Mantra to chant, there is no harm is Chanting AUM alongwith that Mantra. Because AUMremains on the highest place in Mantras, Your Guru Mantra will not be affected by this chanting, rather it will give boost to your personal Mantra.

THE WAY OF CHANTING : AUM should be chanted in such a way that it is divided into three parts AU.....MMM...HNHNHNHN. The o and m portion should be for the 25% of the total time taken, and HNHNHN (The end vibrations sound of OM) should be chanted for 75% of the total time. Normally in the beginning one chanting may take 20-25 seconds, but slowly it will increase and when it reaches one chant per 40 seconds, it is stable and ready to give results. The inhaling between two chants should not be quick. It should be steady and slow (Normally in the beginning it tends to be fast). While inhaling speak mentally "Uttapann karta, Palankarta, Nashtakarta Ishwar (Or creator, operator and destroyer the God)" while inhaling. It will not only remind you of the aim of Mantra but also regularises your inhalation. The best time to do OM meditation is either 5 am in the morning or empty stomach in the evening. After chanting OM for about 15/20 minutes (increase 5 minutes every week), and then sit down or lie down quietly and feel the vibrations of HNNN (the last sound of OM) spreading all over the body and centering on Agya Chakra (Between eyes on the forehead). This time no thought should enter the mind.
