Guest guest
Part Three: Sankara Taught Mayavadi Philosophy

Sankaracarya is therefore undoubtedly on of the most revered teachers of Vedanta, but to this day advocates of the Vedanta still amalgamate the individual, as well as the Supreme Personaly of Godhead Krishna, into one big cosmic ocean just you have suggested again in your closing statement. Sankaracarya spent the majority of his life teaching this very thing, and those who do this are referred to as Mayavadis. This is confirmed by Krishna Dasa Kaviraja, the author of “Sri Caitanya Caritamrita”, where he clearly states that Sankararacarya is in fact a mayavadi.

tarkika-mimamsaka, yata mayavadi-gana
sankhya, patanjala, smrti, purana, agama

“There are many kinds of philosophers. Some are logicians who follow Gautama or Kanada. Some follow the Mimamsa philosophy of Jaimini. Some follow the Mayavada philosophy of Sankaracarya, and others follow Kapila's Sankhya philosophy or the mystic yoga system of Patanjali. Some follow the smrti-sastra composed of twenty religious scriptures, and others follow the Puranas and the tantra-sastra. In this way there are many different types of philosophers.” Sri Caitanya Caritamrita - Krishna Dasa Kaviraja - Madhya 9.42

You have also implied that when all the Jiva-Atmas reach the final Brahman destination they may choose to retain their personal conceptions but the ocean will remain indifferent to that. However this is not what Lord Krishna’s states:

ya idam paramam guhyam mad-bhaktesv abhidhasyati
bhaktim mayi param krtva mam evaisyaty asamsayah
na ca tasman manusyesu kascin me priya-krttamah
bhavita na ca me tasmad anyah priyataro bhuvi

“For one who explains this supreme secret to the devotees, pure devotional service is guaranteed, and at the end he will come back to Me. There is no servant in this world more dear to Me than he, nor will there ever be one more dear.” - Bg 18.69,70

I respectfully request you to consider these matters more carefully then you have apparently done so up to this date. You are free to believe what you like, but you have a serious responsibility when you speak about Vedanta and the Sidhanta of the Vedic Literatures. There are numerous references that clearly indicate that Krishna is the summabonum Bhagavan realization but you do not share that with your reading audience. Krishna is accepted by all the great transcendentalists as the Cause of all Causes and He even states that He himself is both the origin and the purpose of the Vedanta:

sarvasya caham hrdi sannivisto mattah smrtirjnanam apohanam ca
vedais ca sarvair aham eva vedyo vedanta-krd veda-vid eva caham

“I am seated in everyone's heart, and from Me come remembrance, knowledge and forgetfulness. By all the Vedas, I am to be known. Indeed, I am the compiler of Vedanta, and I am the knower of the Vedas.” - Bg. 15.15

Even Sripada Sankaracarya acknowledged this point at the end of his life, yet still his follower’s talk about things like merging into the cosmic ocean. This is terribly misleading and leads to atheism because it negates God’s individuality and the five loving relationships he has with his Devotee. I therefore request you to please review the material I have taken the time to share with you herein and pray that you will not continue to abjure the Personality of Godhead in the future.

Hoping this finds you earnestly engaged in the service of Lord Krishna.

Your servant,

mayesvara dasa
robertswg (M-F 7AM - 3PM)
mayesvara (About once a week on weekends.)
