Guest guest
Barring the states of Tamil Nadu and Kerala and may be a few other states, all other states and cultures in India follow the lunar calender. In this case, the calender is charted keeping the position of the moon and the universe and earth. This calender gives us the position of the earth around the sun in its orbit, to the fourth decimal digit in accuracy.
A year is divided into two aayanas or divisons.
Uttarayana and the Dhakshina aayana. - Nothern and the Southern part of the year.

One aayana is divided into three rutus
One rutu will have two months.
One month will have two pakshas
One paksha will have two weeks
One week will have seven days.

All these are derived based on the position of the earth on its orbit w.r.t. the sun and determined by examining the lunar position w.r.t. the universe. Its a great mathematical feat followed since eight thousand or time immorial.

When a year ends and a new year is about to begin, the new year is known as Ugadi day in Karnataka and adjoining states. The first day of shukla paksha of Chitra month of Vasantha rutu of Uttara aayana of the year.

This day is called by other names in the rest of the country in many regions.

Hope this helps.

- Seshadri.
