Guest guest
Navakumar's son was Haribeej; Haribeej's son was Harishchandra. Harishchandra was a good king. He married Shivya, the daughter of the king Somadutta. He soon had a son Rohidas.
In Indra's court, five Apsara's were dancing. They suddenly fell out of step. Indra cursed them to remain captive in Rishi Vishwamitra's Ashrama. The apsaras asked - when will we be relived of this curse. Indra said, you will be free when you see the King Harishchandra. In Vishwamitra's Ashrama, the apsaras started creating havoc. they tore off flowers from plants, and started braking of branches. Vishwamitra then bound them with creepers. Harishchandra happened to be passing by. Hearing a girl cry out for help, Harishchandra approached the ashrama. Seeing the king, the apsaras were relieved of their curse and went heavenwards.
Vishwamitra was angry. He approached the king. Why did you free those girls? The king said, they called for help, as the king I relieved them. If I have done something wrong, I am willing to correct myself. Tell me what to do.
What can you give me - asked the sage. Whatever you ask for - replied the king. "Then take an oath", said the sage, "that what ever I ask for, will be given and you will not go back on your word. Give me your world.". Harishchandra said "All I have is yours". The sage then asked for Gurudakshina. When the king started searching for something to give, the sage "All you have is yours. Earn 7crore gold coins and give them to me. Go to Varanasi. Stay there and earn dakshina".
Hearing the Rishi's words, along with his wife and son, the king left off for Varanasi. He had seven days to earn the money and give it to the sage.
