Guest guest
In Mithila, many rishis started a yagna, but rakshashas would not let the yagna be completed. As soon as they started, the rakshashas would throw blood and meat in the pyre. Seeing that they could not control the rakshashas, one of the rishis, Vishwamitra, decided to go to Ayodhya and fetch Rama and kill the rakshashas. Approaching Dasharatha, Vishwamitra asked for Rama and Lakshmana. Dasharatha was afraid that something would happen. He was always afraid of Andhaka's curse. He said, "Even when I am asleep Rama is in my dreams. After I accidentally killed Sindhu, his father cursed me saying I would die when I would be separated from my son. Let me go with you. I have fought numerous asuras. I can relieve you of your problem. Rama is young boy. He has just learnt the art of weaponry and he is not well versed in it." Vishwamitra said, "Only Rama can solve my problem. Harishchandra gave me all he had. You hesitate to give me your son? Shame on you". Dasharatha was afraid. He thought he would trick the sage. He sent for Bharata and Shatrughna and presented them as Rama and Lakshmana. Taking them, Vishwamitra left. On the way, Vishwamitra pointed out the way and said that in the forests there was a rakshashi, Taraka, who would have to be killed. Bharata said, "Let us take an alternative route". Vishwamitra realized he had been tricked. Rama, who was brave, would never have said that. He was enraged. He went back to Dasharatha hoping to curse him. When all were afraid what would happen, Rama went to Vishwamitra and begged him to forgive his father.
Seeing Rama in front of him, Vishwamitra was thrilled. When Rama and Lakshmana got ready to go with him, the sage approached Dashartha and told him not to worry. "Rama has been born on this earth to relieve it of the rakshashas. They will be back safe and sound." Rama took leave of his father and mother and along with Lakshmana set off with Vishwamitra. Vishwamitra set off in front followed with two princes. It was as if Brahma was walking, followed by the Ashwini twins.
The sun was hot and Rama began sweating. Vishwamitra wondered how Rama would manage if he got tired so soon. He told the princes to take a dip in the Sarayu River and come back to him. He then taught them the Sumantra mantra. Using that mantra, they would not feel tired.
