Guest guest
Om shanti...

after a while i have returned. Here is a quote that may be enjoyed:

*This is what you should do: love the earth and sun and the animals, despise riches, give alms to everyone that asks, stand up for the stupid and crazy, devote your income and labor to others, hate tyrants, argue not concerning God, have patience and indulgence toward the people, take off your hat to nothing known or unknown or to any man or number of men. Re-examine all you
have been told at school or church or in any book, dismiss what insults your own soul, and your very flesh shall be a great poem.*
-- Walt Whitman

When we live our lives as a poem of Divinity, then indeed, we are the masterpieces of Creation.

Om
Guest guest
Blessed Self, shikaa om

With regard to the poem of Walt Whitman:

1. 'hate tyrants'. It seems to me we should love the tyrant as we love everyone else. We should not even hate the work of the tyrant for that makes us just as tyrannical. We can work (objectively) to ameliorate the work of the tyrant.

2. 'take off your hat to nothing known or unknown or to any man or number of men.' That advice seems to be a little stiff-necked and egotistical. Surely, humility would be a more suitable virtue. While I revere my Guru, I also follow his advice to practice sadhana so that I can know for myself.

3. 'despise riches' Again, why should one entertain any negative thoughts at all? If it is your karma to have wealth, better that you accept with good grace and use that wealth to achieve the other injunctions of Whitman, namely, 'give alms to everyone that ask' and 'devote your income and labor to others'.

4. I particularly like the injunction to 'stand up for the stupid and crazy'. If you think that I am either of those, please be kind in your response.

Om namah Sivaya

Omprem
Guest guest
Om Shanti Dear One,

how astute is your eye! Alas, i had not viewed the poem as carefully and look!

Yes, this is very true...we should never hate, even, the tyrant. And that we must strive to view what is done only--not how or by whom--what sage advice. If for no other reason, the review of the poem in this regard was good for me to see. Thank you. So, we may note those dusty corners of myself that are in need to be purified and perfumed by dyana and pure love. To become more and more free!

This, then, becomes, true detachment--what a marvel, this is: To see the action and not the actor thus. Surely, this one is engaged in this very struggle as of late. And, once again, we may note how our cyber clubs are here to mirror our needs...

And yes, upon deeper reflection to the poem, it is true, that to make distinction upon Any is a sign of Ego. Alas, i was not a careful reader, it seems. It is good to delve into our thoughts and note what we choose. I had read somewhere, in a club perhaps, that true humility is a gift that is given by the grace of the Gurudeva or Isha Devata. So, i do pray for this gift and hope that one day this dream among a few others are granted.

Then, it would seem that one would not be tossed by the seas of maya when they are anchored by the humble threads of such sweet devotion to our heart's song.

As to the riches, i have been both rich and poor and find that the later is more satisfying. Our beloved Sri Sri Ramakrishna shunned money--and it may be that this was more of a message for the many that do become enslaved to these pieces of paper and metal and all that it entails. There are a few that are free of this bondage... Was there not a great King--Janaka [?] that was thus?

Possibly, the word despise is too strong..again i was not a careful reader.

Look what has happned...in using the words of another so many misreprensentations have sprung forth..like the deeds from one's seeds of karma.

The thought that we are poems was the hoped for goal..that we are a colorful collection of verse that is interwoven into a masterpiece of divine creation. That we are poems and songs to the Beloved--And, that when we select the prose of our deeds, if we use our heart instead of our ego-self, the resulting imagery will be as beautiful as a song

The lovely poem by dear annapura is an example of such beauty. It is wonderful that these wonderful words of Jubilee have, like the scented breeze of jasmine have softened some of the negativity of what was posted by me in hope to be an offerning in my return to a few cyber clubs. Please accept my smile as pardon.

Dear one, i can never see Any One as either stupid or crazy--too vile words unto themselves. This point of view is indeed a supreme injustice to any soul and is very short sighted.

There are so many levels of existence and so many dimensions in our life that each atom has it's perfected place that may or maynot be apparent. Who am i to question another's frame of mind? In fact, many see me as both dull and spaced out [to list a few discriptives] so i would be the last to consider these terms on another soul.

Om Prem, your points are valid, that the poem selected has a tone that is a little aggressive and ego based for our Sadhnana--and this is a good excerise to caution a sadhaka to think about the manner of words of which they may be exposed to.

As we are all energy we must strive towards the highest vibrations--a task which can be quite a challenge at times. Thank you for allowing a lesson in this regard.

Please, Dear One, see only Peace and joy as the response that are sent from my heart to yours.

Om

Guest guest
Thanks dear omprem for commenting on this poem.

Although I enjoy several of Witman's poems, this one seemed to strike a discord regarding some basic spiritual principles. Wealth is not the enemy, it is the temperaments we bring to it that creates one. The call not to bow to any human, is probably to prevent obeisance to 'fake' gurus, and/or to ensure the ultimate ideal of the SELF is always held as the highest; however, in practical life it has more often than not led to arrogance. Practitioners of any faith, when they truly love "GOD" cannot help but love 'man', no matter what, while staying away from the 'tyranny' itself.

Any negative emotions held against the ignorance of the world hurts only ourselves, and may even be another form of ignorance. The bearer of the ignorance has to bear the fruits of their karma anyway.

While seekers have to learn to honor the ignorant/ignorance, our journey does often require an action to either remove its presence from our lives or move away, whichever is feasible. Masters like Christ and Krishna among others, are at a level of consciousness where they can embrace them, without being effected by their energy, and assist their transformation into the light. Then again, even they have been known to leave people to their own karmic journey.

I specially like your request - no. 4. Aren't we all "stupid and crazy" in a way? In a world that is ultimately a reflection of ourselves, who then stand up for whom?

Thanks again

Tat twam asi
UMA
