Guest guest
When we speak of humility and its role in sadhna, I am reminded of the story of a zen monk.

A student approached his guru to ask for enlightenment. His Guru said he will, but first he must bring a pot of tea and an empty cup. When the student returned, he was asked to pour the tea into his cup. As the cup filled up, the Guru told him to pour more. Even when the tea began to spill, the guru asked him to keep on pouring.

Puzzled, the student asks the Guru why he is asking him to pour into the cup, it is already full and it can't hold any more.

The Guru then told the student "When the cup is full, it is not possible to pour any more into it. Similarly, you have come to me with your mind full of what you already know. When you can empty yourself completely; when your cup is totally empty, I will be able to give you enlightenment!"

Humility helps empty our "cups". ONLY when our cups of what we think we know can be emptied, can we get "saranagati" (place) at the Mother's feet ie. the experience of self realization.

We spend lifetimes, learning how to empty all we learn. Only then can we get our release.

_/\_

UMA
