Debt to God: One is indebted to God for He is our Creator and Sustainer.

2. Debt to sages: One is indebted to the sages and saints for documenting all the knowledge they have acquired with their spiritual practice, in the form of scriptures, for us to follow.

3. Debt to ancestors: Whatever one has or is today, one owes a lot of it to his forefathers.

4. Debt to society: One is living in the society and is dependent on it, even for day to day needs like water and electricity, etc.

The 4 debts are not applicable to a disciple:

In Spirituality, one needs to be committed to the cause of the everlasting Truth, that is, the Guru. When one has a Guru, one is free from all the four debts. The four debts are not applicable to a disciple, as he has offered his mind, body and wealth to the Guru. Thus he no longer exists as an independent personality but is fully under Guru's control. Since he is under the Guru’s control he cannot be committed to repay debts. The Guru takes care of him and all the debts incurred by him. The Guru will ask him to do sadhana by which the debts will be repayed automatically. A disciple has a debt only towards his Guru, which can only be repaid by attaining Self-Realization.

With Love
Sanatan
Glenn-Sampada
