Guest guest
Imagine how tempting it would be to misuse powers such as these or even to just amuse yourself with them. Siddhis confer absolute power to do anything. But remember that absolute power can corrupt absolutely.

It takes a saintly person to use siddhis wisely without attachment. If there is even the least hint of satisfaction in the guru that he or she has and can use the siddhis even for the benefit of others, then the seeds of that guru’s destruction are sown. The guru must use those siddhis as a karma yogi with no attachment to the fruits of his or her labour. And as a bhakti yogi striving to see God in all situations and people and offering his or her actions as love offerings to God. It is in these ways that the guru avoids corruption.

So what about the rest of us who may acquire siddhis during our spiritual evolution? Each of us has a purpose in life that overrides all else. That purpose is to come to Brahman. But we also have a karmic purpose that is suited to this particular life and the karma that is to be discharged in this life.

There are many people who have siddhis who are called psychics, channelers or healers. These people may have been granted those siddhis in order to pursue their karmic purpose in this lifetime. Their task, however, is use the siddhis to pursue that karmic purpose without interferring with the overriding purpose of coming to God. Too often, people get dazzled by the siddhis and by the money and fame that comes to them from using the siddhis. Then they are diverted from that their overriding purpose of coming to God and, in fact, take a detour away from God thus creating additional karma for themselves.

Aside from ego aggrandizement, people can get lost in the world of siddhis. Curiousity about where and how far the siddhis can take one will cause the person lose their spiritual focus. There is no difference between exploring siddhis and daydreaming. They are both highly entertaining, often informative and both can divert one from life’s tasks, in this case, the task of coming to God. The likelihood is that you end up being further away from God as a result of using siddhis than you are right now.

So the use of siddhis, whether by a guru or a more ordinary person, is fraught with danger and temptation that few can survive. The choice is yours as to whether you think that you can handle the siddhis. My choice is to ignore them and continue to move past all content toward Brahman.

Hari Om Tat Sat

omprem
