Guest guest
Benefits of attending satsangs

1. Most people in society believe neither in Spirituality nor in its practice. Listening to those who speak against Spirituality or ridicule spiritual practice often causes the faith of a seeker in the initial stages to waver. Therefore, doubts that a seeker harbors are overcome only when he attends satsangs regularly.

2.One of the rationales of group therapy for patients is a feeling of competitiveness developing amongst them to recover faster, which helps in faster recovery. A similar benefit is derived by seekers when attending satsangs.

3. Seekers gain useful practical information through discussion about the nature of problems faced by fellow seekers and how these are resolved by them or by the Guru at the satsang.

4. The proportion of the sattva component in seekers attending satsangs is more than that in the general population. Due to the cumulative effect of the sattva component in all the seekers, a sattvik environment is created. This helps to further increase the proportion of the sattva component in a seeker.

5. The sattvik environment results in an improvement in the seeker’s spiritual practice (chanting, meditation, etc.).

6. Sometimes positive energies manifest around people with a sattvik temperament. Seekers benefit from these also.

7. In a satsang, one develops a feeling of closeness towards other seekers; they seem to be ‘one’s own’. Especially the younger generation, just starting the practice of Spirituality, learns to live amicably, forgetting family feuds and rivalries, which may have existed for past generations. From this very feeling, the attitude that ‘The whole Universe is my home’ develops in due course of time.

8. The effect of bad company (kusang) is exactly the opposite; hence, it is best avoided.

Practical Application of the Benefits of satsang

Since Spirituality is a science of experience, the best way for a seeker to experience the benefits of satsangs is to observe their spiritual practice before and after the satsang.

The different ways that one can be in satsang are:
1. Attending satsang with fellow seekers.

2. Studying a book on Spirituality or a Holy text written by a Saint, Spiritual newsletters such as the Weekly Online.

3. Listen to audiocassettes of discourse or bhajans by Saints or watch videocassettes of discourses given by Saints.

4. Doing Sat related activity (satseva).

The point to remember here is that satsang means to be in Sat or to experience Sat. Thus, merely being in the company of fellow seekers or Spiritual books will not give the benefit of satsang. One needs to make an attempt to actually experience Sat in such environments. Thus, by chanting the Lord’s Name and being in satsang with the Name, one can practically be in satsang throughout the day.

Source http://www.sanatan.org/weekly
