Guest guest
I wish to add to Tat twamasi's information about the festival of "Makar-Sankranti" This festival of India is not a meare sociological event, but an Indian ingenous about yearly calander. It marks a very important astronomical imoprtance. It is a "summer solactice"( one of the two eqvinoxwes) for astronomers. Now the wonder lies in the fact that only Indians follow a calander which is a sun calander as well as a moon calander. They count months by moon's, and year by sun's position in vernaral equivinox. Thus it so happens that all calanders which follow sun to mark an year (like common christian calander),Makar Sankranti invarriably falls on 13-14th January; whereas all calanders, which follow moon to mark an year (like Islamic calander),20th june corresponds with "winter solatice", another Sankranti for Hindus(Kark Sankranti)This other one too very immoprtant for astronomers but it has so far not found the position of a "festival" in urban societies.( though it is very populer, and considered to be of the same value as Makar-sankranti in rural India amongst agragarian societies. It is known as Satuwan in UP/Bihar)
Of course all celestial phenomenons do help in spritual enlightments.
S.
