Guest guest
Importance of introspection in spiritual practice

In Spirituality, it is very important to constantly improve oneself from a spiritual point of view. To progress to the next level, one needs to put in effort in the right direction. To know the right direction, one first needs to find out exactly what one is presently doing, what are the next steps that can be taken and what are the points where one is deficient. For instance, when a person is sick and visits a doctor, the doctor recommends specific treatment. However, the doctor can prescribe effective treatment as well as further treatment only to the person, who can correctly articulate his problem and explain whether the current treatment is working well. In the same way, constant introspection of daily spiritual activities is needed for genuine and complete awareness of one’s spiritual status to receive effective guidance about one’s current spiritual practice as well as about progressing to the next step in spiritual practice. Besides, constant introspection aids in perseverance in spiritual practice.

One of the ways to maintain regular introspection is by keeping a diary or a timetable to note down what efforts one is making daily. After some time of doing such regular introspection, one would be able to get deeper insight into oneself and realize where improvement is required.

Accordingly, it then will be possible to seek the appropriate guidance and make further progress.

- Dr. (Mrs.) Nandini Samant.

Source http://www.sanatan.org/weekly (Issue # 104)
