Guest guest
On Sakam* and Nishkam spiritual practice
(With and without expectations)

Spiritual practice with expectation of material benefits is akin to having a business relationship with God. One should seek instead to have a father-son relationship with one’s divine Father. Just as a son knows that his needs will be taken care of by his father because of his relationship, the seeker doing spiritual practice without expectation of material benefits knows that The Lord will take care of all his needs. One needs to develop faith to be able to do spiritual practice without expectations.

When spiritual practice is done without expectations it results in faster spiritual progress, as against spiritual practice done with expectation of material benefits. This is because, in the former, no spiritual energy is spent in fulfilling one’s desires, unlike in the latter. Also, in the former, one makes spiritual progress while one’s needs/desires are taken care of all the same, while in the latter, only the desires get fulfilled without much accompanying spiritual progress.

*Refer to Issue #54 for further details about sakam and nishkam spiritual practice.

Source http://www.sanatan.org/weekly (issue # 93)
