Guest guest
Namaste all...

I came across this site today in my web travels and thought it may be of use to some. It's a downloadable Sanskrit dictionary. One of the .zip files is pretty big, but it is worth the download if you ever need help with translation.

http://members.ams.chello.nl/l.bontes/sans_n.htm

Note: it translates from Sanskrit to English and back again.

With love,
Erica
Guest guest
Namaste Erica

Thank you for the link on the dictionary. I am downloading it now. This will save me hours of work referring to Apte's dictionary. The best part is that this is the digitized form of the Monier Williams dictionary. Thank you once again.

MAA Bless You.

Jai MAA KAALI !!!
Guest guest
Thank you too for the dictionary url. This is must be the beginnings of the Monier's dictionary, cos I can't find half the words I look for in this one. I wonder if I am doing something wrong!

I have the Monier Monier Williams dictionary, but an electronic version would certainly simplify my searches.

Thanks again..

_/\_

Uma
Guest guest
did you download the full dictionary database of close to 7 MB ?
Guest guest
Well, I did say that the file is big when I originally posted the URL. I know that many are not as fortunate as I am with a high speed connection, but I thought others could use it. Sorry.

As far as searching goes, the dictionary isn't complete, but I have found many of the more common words that I -- as a complete newbie -- was looking for. It does take some time to get used to the transliteration, I think, but I have no problems using it.

Sorry if people don't think it was useful to post. I know that there has been discussion about online translation resources before, and thought I'd post. Sorry!

Erica
Guest guest
Hi Erica

>>Sorry if people don't think it was useful to post.>>

I think I lost you here!

I do think it is a very useful posting specially for those who are constantly using the sanskrit dictionary. I asked the question to make sure that I hadn't done anything wrong as far as downloading goes. Thank you for replying. I went back and downloaded it again to make sure I did it correctly and the file size what it was supposed to be.

Thanks again

_/\_

Uma
