Recently, the British Medical Journal published a study about the

effects of repetition of the Catholic rosary and yoga mantras on

cardiovascular (heart) rhythms. It involved the comparison of the

effects of recitation of the rosary,'Ave Maria' (in Latin) and the

mantra 'Om-Mani-Padme-Om' on breathing, breathing rate, blood

pressure, etc. The study found that recitation of 'rhythm formulas',

such as the rosary and mantras, caused a powerful and synchronous

increase in cardiovascular rhythms and slowed respiration to almost

exactly 6 breaths per minute. Hence, the study concluded that such

recitations induce favorable psychological and possibly physiological

effects. It further said that the rosary might be viewed as a health

practice as well as a religious practice.

The above study finding is a reminder of the benefits of chanting.

What contemporary medical science is discovering now has always been

understood, practiced and experienced under the science of

Spirituality! Besides its many psychological and physiological

benefits, chanting is especially powerful in overcoming Destiny

(prarabdha) - the chief cause of major illnesses like heart trouble -

and bringing about rapid spiritual progress. Being without

restrictions of purity, age, etc., and simple enough to be done

mentally, chanting can be done anytime, anywhere and along with other

activities, making it the spiritual practice for the current times,

recommended by all religions. Hence, one need not wait for the 'seal

of approval' from medical science to commence this powerful spiritual

practice and experience its benefits firsthand!
