Om Aspirants

There is much focus on Gurus here, most of it negative. Perhaps

that reflects peoples' experience with self-styled gurus. Or ,

perhaps people need to project their aspirations onto someone

else only to be disappointed when that person doesn't live up to

the 'disciple's' expectations. Or, perhaps, some spend too much

time reading newspaper accounts of gurus who have

succumbed to fame, fortune, and sex.

But none of this has anything to do with a Self-Realized Guru.

Nor with the relationship that a shishya has with such a Guru. As

Tatwamasi has said, the shishya is expected to give up his or

her ego and follow the advice of such a Guru. Often, the Guru will

not give advice but merely arrange for events to confront the

shishya in such a way as to educate him or her on the futility of

an outwardly-directed, individualized ego and to develop him or

her spiritually.

It is up to the seeker to purify themselves and develop sufficient

detachment, discrimination, fearlessness and wisdom to

recognize the true nature of those they choose to see as Guru. If

this is not done, why blame the imposter Gurus? Their

shortcomings are no more significant than one's own. Why

generalize to challenge the legitimacy of all Gurus? That is

merely infantile revenge. Blaming others for what is your own

making. Refusing to acknowledge your own shortcomings.

Instead, use your innate wisdom and don't rely on knee-jerk

prejudices and conditionings when viewing what is in front of

and within you to make decisions about your spiritual path.

Having had the good fortune to know a Self-Realized Guru, and

through him, his Self-Realized Guru, I can only wish you all the

same good fortune.
